So ive been using this technique of shading called crosshatching for about a few days now, but everytime i try to do it it kinda looks a bit muddy or gross. Any tips?

what kind of pencils/pens are you using? try to aim for consistent distance between the lines with very thin tips, think of a mechanical pencil or an archival pen. the thicker your drawing tool is, they muddier it might look.
